I am teaching this topics course in fall (modulo all of the
state-sponsored chaos in the university). I'd be grateful if you could
spread the word far and wide to advanced graduate students with relevant
interests. thanks!

CS 6724: Digital Cities and Internet Communities

Visions and possibilities for digital cites and other types of Internet
communities are being discussed throughout society. They are
being widely implemented. They represent a growing segment of Internet
commerce. These developments raise many questions;
among these are following: What is a community? What are the parts or
types of communities? What are the special needs of
particular communities? How do electronic networks support the
activities and concerns of communities? What problems do they
entrain? How do various types of network communities differ (MUDs,
newsgroups, digital cities, community networks)? How do
network communities emerge, grow, change? What is the relationship of
e-commerce and e-tourism to community computing?
How can we design networks to effectively support communities? How
can we study networking issues empirically? We will
survey Internet communities focusing on how they impact human activities
and institutions.
